Pakistan's first satellite launched for Earth observation and natural disaster management
China launched the first of a constellation of remote sensing satellites for Pakistan on Thursday evening, January 16, 2025, from the Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert. The Long March 2D rocket was launched at 11:07 p.m. EST (0407 UTC), carrying Pakistan's PRSC-EO1 satellite into space, along with other satellites from a number of Chinese companies. PRSC-EO1 is the first in a series of three satellites dedicated to Pakistan, which will join existing satellites such as PRSS-1 and PakTES-1A, to enhance the country’s capabilities in areas such as terrestrial mapping, agricultural classification and assessment, urban and rural planning, environmental monitoring, natural disaster management, and natural resource protection. The Chinese company "CASC" announced the success of the launch, and explained that the payload included satellites for Pakistan and some Chinese commercial companies. The China Wall Space Industry Corporation (CGWIC) said it organized the mission in collaboration with the Pakistan Space and Atmospheric Research Commission (SUPARCO), which signed a multi-launch services agreement in 2022.
